Overview
Competency Learning Kit ("CLK") is free and open-source software for running competency-based learning programs.
CLK stores all your data in your Google Drive. To use CLK, you need a Google account. Many institutions provide Google Workspace accounts and e-mails to their staff. If you do have a Google Workspace account, you can set up CLK to store data in shared drives.
CLK tracks learners' progress using competencies. A competency is a concrete skill, milestone, topic, or ability, such as "Writes in complete sentences."
Educators can provide evidence of learners' progress at any time. Whether each piece of evidence demonstrated a competency can be marked as Yes/Some/No. Notes and digital artifacts can be attached.
Educators can provide assessments of learner's progress at any time. Assessments "roll up" evidence. When assessing, an educator reviews previous evidence and rates the learner as Never/Sometimes/Reliably demonstrating each competency.
First-Time Setup
After signing in, if someone in your institution has already set up CLK in a shared drive that you have access to, it will automatically find and connect to that data. If not, you'll be prompted to select a Google Drive (a shared drive or your personal drive) to set up CLK within.
The first thing to setup is the competency architecture. In the Setup tab, educators can navigate to the Competency Architecture subtab and create all the competencies they wish to track. Competencies can be added into groups. We recommend creating a group for each educator reflecting the competencies they are most likely to comment on.
Educators must also set up the learners. This can be done manually or via import from Google Classroom. Learners can be organized into groups, for example by class year.
Finally, educators can set up report templates. Reports take the form of a sunburst chart, where learners grow competencies from the inside out. You can drag competencies onto the report template to set up their position and help communicate which competencies build on each other.
Sharing Reports
Right now, the only way to share reports with parents is to print them (either physically or to PDF). Navigate to the Reports tab, choose Learner Report, choose the report template you want to use, select all students you want to print, and then use the browser's print functionality (usually CTRL-P or CMD-P) to print them.
